​​How BOLItracker ™ Was Developed

BOLItracker™ is a proprietary database that includes detailed information about BOLI holdings for every bank in the country.  The database includes 12-month returns and purchases which have been developed as follows:  

BOLI 12-Month Returns are established with a “high degree of accuracy” for selected banks using the following methodology:

1. Quarterly inforce cash values are gathered from primary source data provided in the Call and Thrift Financial Reports and adjusted for obvious coding errors.
2. Data is supplemented with information obtained from SEC filings and other public sources.
3. The database is then adjusted for mergers and acquisitions by backfilling data into prior periods.
4. Actuarial probabilities are then applied to flag obvious deaths, surrenders and new purchases.
5. Banks with no apparent deaths, surrenders, purchases or unusual returns in the past four quarters are placed into the “high degree of accuracy” grouping.
6. Banks with deaths, surrenders or purchases in only one of the past four quarters are also placed into the “high degree of accuracy” grouping if returns for the missing quarter can be reasonably estimated from available information including historical returns.
7. Banks with two or more of the last four quarters showing unusual results are contacted directly by CCG and asked to voluntarily provide the requested information.Confidential information obtained in this fashion will only be made available at a summary level.
8. Only banks placed into the “high degree of accuracy” grouping are included in summary-level reports.Note that most banks fall into this category. Also, there is no reason to believe returns from banks not placed into this grouping are higher or lower than the “high degree of accuracy” banks.

BOLI Purchases can be readily determined from the BOLItracker™ database for virtually all banks with a high degree of accuracy.  This information and the corresponding reports do not include purchases resulting from a Section 1035 e

Summary-Level Data including average 12-month returns and new purchases is determined for several different groupings of banks based upon levels of inforce BOLI cash values. This information is currently made available free-of charge to banks by COLI Consulting Group LLC (CCG). Custom Reports are available for a modest fee. These reports can analyze and compare purchases, holdings, annual returns and other relevant information between a target bank and a client-provided list of peer group banks and/or bank holding companies.

The BOLItracker™ Access Database and an array of accompanying reports, commentary and analysis includes details about BOLI holdings, purchases, annual returns and other relevant information about all banks and holding companies owning $10 million or more of cash value life insurance.
